The conversation about ‘single use plastics’ is becoming a subject that a lot of people are speaking about as it is becoming increasingly well known that plastic is massive contributor to the irreversible effects to the environment.

What is the issue with single use plastics?

Daily, we see plastic littered on our streets as people disregard the packaging after use, forgetting the effects that it will have. Most of time, the rubbish ends up in our oceans, harming habitats and creating mass rubbish patches causing deadly disruption to Sealife. The Pacific Ocean’s rubbish patch now measures 1.6 million km².

But it also poses a threat to the climate as plastic releases powerful greenhouse gases as it slowly breaks down – 450 years for a 500ml fizzy drink bottle.  In 2019, the production of plastic added more than 850 million metric tonnes of greenhouse gases to our environment and by 2050, 13% of these gases will account for the total remaining carbon budget.

What is greenhouse gas?

Greenhouse gases are gases in the earth’s atmosphere that traps heat. The earth is unable to release this gas and this contributes to the extreme weather we have been experiencing which leads to food supply disruptions, wildfires and other natural disasters.

How to reduce the use of Single Use Plastics

To tackle the issue of plastic and its effects on the environment, we need to act and reduce the demand of the use of plastic.

By using reusable products, you reduce the greenhouse emissions that contribute to climate change which will help sustain the environment for not only future generations but the wildlife that are becoming extinct through human negligence.

What changes can you make?

  • Reduce the amount of plastic you buy: Buying loose fruit and vegetables.
  • Reuse packaging: Plastic shopping bags.
  • Opt for sustainable options: Reusable bottles, straws.
  • Buy pre-loved: Reducing your carbon footprint.
  • Recycle: Make sure you are correctly recycling rubbish.
  • Eco-friendly products: Chemicals that don’t damage the environment.
  • Educate yourself & others
  • Walk short distances instead of driving.
